Once you glue ceramic tile onto a wall it s generally there to stay. Since they are available in a wide variety of colors designs and sizes they fit into any decor. Sheetrock or drywall is no different for tiling over than wood plaster cement or other wall materials. When you only want to remove a portion of the tile though there is a way of doing so without damaging the tile entirely.

Step 1 prepare the wall. So if you re looking to put your tiles on a bathroom or kitchen wall be sure you get semi vitreous or impervious tiles. Tiles can be installed as a floor or wall covering nearly anywhere but they are especially useful in bathrooms and kitchens. Tiled walls can resist moisture and handle scrubbing much more readily than drywall or other materials and so they are the ideal choice for humid bathrooms and kitchens where they will be exposed to cooking splatters.

So much so that removal of the tile often involves destruction of the tile in the process. Start by cleaning the wall to remove any grease then apply thin set adhesive and set the tile. This is the case so much of the time that when people tell me on the phone that they have tiles they can push in with their hands in the shower or that the tiles are falling off the wall or seem squishy i immediately get the image in my mind of the very common 4 ceramic tiles installed over drywall. Ceramic tiles can be installed directly on drywall plaster or if they are in moist areas onto green drywall or even better cement backer board.

Or prime and paint the entire wall room before starting with your tile project. Tiles are ideal for showers bathtubs and backsplashes. Prime an area larger than you plan to tile to minimize the cut in work when you paint the rest of the room. Allow the mortar or mastic to sit for at least 12 hours to set properly.

Prime the area to seal the new drywall. The wall has to simply be prepared in order to complete this task properly. Place strips of blue painter s tape over the tile face sticking each end to the wall to prevent the tiles from sliding or falling off as the mastic sets. If you want to update your kitchen or bathroom walls with tiles you don t have to remove existing painted drywall to do so.

After the adhesive has set apply grout and you re done.
